Many of us are concerned about what vitamins a dog needs and does the dog get everything needed. Because of this I decided to write this blog post about vitamins in general.
Only a few of us knows that the dog is able to synthesize vitamins in its body when the body is in good condition and working properly. It’s a strange thought because we people can’t do the same and for us it’s very important to get all the vitamins we need from what we eat. Dogs are different in this.
If you’re not familiar with vitamins, here’s some basic information about what kind of vitamins are there. Vitamins can be divided in two types: water- or fat-soluble. This means that the water-soluble vitamins are the ones that won’t store in our bodies for a long time but the fat-soluble vitamins do. Those are stored in our bodies and it means that it’s possible to have a fat-soluble vitamin overdose. We also need fat to storage and utilize fat-soluble vitamins.
Vitamins B and C are water-solubles and vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-solubles.
Many of us have an impression that each vitamin acts independently. In general we think that if you are suffering from vitamin B1 deficiency, just add vitamin B1 to your nutrition. But this is a misconception because the vitamins act together in harmony.
It means that it’s not enough to get a certain amount of one vitamin but to get right amount of all the vitamins in relation to each other and even this is not the whole truth.. Vitamins are also involved with minerals and fatty acids and you need to get the right balance between all of them. Vitamin deficiency can be just as bad as an overdose of vitamins.
When the dog is eating raw food, that balance is usually guaranteed. However, it’s good to know how the different vitamins act with each other and why do we need them. Then we can get the big picture. Because of this my next goal is to write a blog post about single vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. So, keep following my blog!
